The first annual sports of the Northwich Victoria FC and Northwich Harriers was held on September 2nd 1893 at the Drill Field. A grass cycle track had been marked on the ground, which had been re-laid because it was rather bumpy as it had been used for football. The weather was glorious which brought out 3,000 spectators. The meeting included two bicycle handicap races over one and two miles.
On September 6th 1893 there was a fete and sports meeting organised by the Philanthropic Society which was held on Doctor Matthew's Field off Beam Street. The meeting included athletic sports, bicycle and foot racing. Admission cost 4d.
The Northwich Harriers held a sports meeting at the Drill Field on August 29th 1896, but the weather was cold and windy, resulting in a reduced attendance of 1,500. JPP Galway of Chester won both the one and two miles bicycle handicap races but there was a serious accident in the one mile, when Gledhill fell heavily and sustained a broken collarbone. This was the last bicycle racing to take place at the ground and local bicycle racing moved to the new stadium at Winnington Park.
Northwich Victoria FC continued to play at the Drill Field for the next hundred years but the ground failed football safety regulations and was closed on 3 May 2002. The football club moved to a new ground at the Victoria Stadium, taking their grandstand with them. It was believed that the Drill Field was the oldest football ground in the world on which football had been continuously played. The site was subsequently developed for housing around Drillfield Road.
